Madison County is a county located in the state of Kentucky. As of 2000, the population is 70,872. Its county seat is Richmond6.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,148 km² (443 mi²). 1,141 km² (441 mi²) of it is land and 6 km² (2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.55% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 70,872 people, 27,152 households, and 18,218 families residing in the county. The population density is 62/km² (161/mi²). There are 29,595 housing units at an average density of 26/km² (67/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 93.01% White, 4.44% Black or African American, 0.28% Native American, 0.72% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.34% from other races, and 1.19% from two or more races. 0.97% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 27,152 households out of which 31.50% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.10% are married couples living together, 10.70% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.90% are non-families. 25.20% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.60% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.42 and the average family size is 2.90.

In the county the population is spread out with 21.90% under the age of 18, 18.80% from 18 to 24, 29.40% from 25 to 44, 20.10% from 45 to 64, and 9.80% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 31 years. For every 100 females there are 93.30 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.20 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $32,861, and the median income for a family is $41,383. Males have a median income of $31,974 versus $22,487 for females. The per capita income for the county is $16,790. 16.80% of the population and 12.00% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 17.80% of those under the age of 18 and 17.10% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
