Madison County is a county located in the state of Montana. As of 2000, the population is 6,851. Its county seat is Virginia City6.
Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 9,331 km² (3,603 mi²). 9,289 km² (3,587 mi²) of it is land and 42 km² (16 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.45% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 6,851 people, 2,956 households, and 1,921 families residing in the county. The population density is 1/km² (2/mi²). There are 4,671 housing units at an average density of 0/km² (1/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 97.02% White, 0.04% Black or African American, 0.53% Native American, 0.26% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.76% from other races, and 1.39% from two or more races. 1.90% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 2,956 households out of which 26.10% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.80% are married couples living together, 4.40% have a female householder with no husband present, and 35.00% are non-families. 29.30% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.90% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.29 and the average family size is 2.85.
