Magoffin County is a county located in the state of Kentucky. As of 2000, the population is 13,332. Its county seat is Salyersville6.

It was the birthplace of Hustler publisher, Larry Flynt.

Geography

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 13,332 people, 5,024 households, and 3,858 families residing in the county. The population density is 17/km² (43/mi²). There are 5,447 housing units at an average density of 7/km² (18/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 99.29% White, 0.15% Black or African American, 0.20% Native American, 0.08% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.02% from other races, and 0.27% from two or more races. 0.42% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 5,024 households out of which 37.50% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.90% are married couples living together, 11.20% have a female householder with no husband present, and 23.20% are non-families. 21.40% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.20% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.62 and the average family size is 3.04.

In the county the population is spread out with 26.80% under the age of 18, 10.10% from 18 to 24, 30.20% from 25 to 44, 22.40% from 45 to 64, and 10.60% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 97.20 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.40 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $19,421, and the median income for a family is $24,031. Males have a median income of $27,745 versus $18,354 for females. The per capita income for the county is $10,685. 36.60% of the population and 31.20% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 45.90% of those under the age of 18 and 29.10% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
