Mamakating, New York

Mamakating is a town located in Sullivan County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 11,002.

The Town of Mamataking is in the southeast part of the county.

History

The town was formed from part of a colonial district in 1788, before the creation of Sullivan County. Parts of the town were removed to form new towns. The name of the region was formerly "Mamacottin."

Geography

The east town line is the border of Orange County, New York. US Route 209 passes through the town.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 254.5 km² (98.2 mi²). 248.4 km² (95.9 mi²) of it is land and 6.0 km² (2.3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.37% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 11,002 people, 4,153 households, and 2,936 families residing in the town. The population density is 44.3/km² (114.7/mi²). There are 5,629 housing units at an average density of 22.7/km² (58.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 93.96% White, 2.14% African American, 0.33% Native American, 1.03% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.89% from other races, and 1.66% from two or more races. 4.77% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 4,153 households out of which 35.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.6% are married couples living together, 9.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.3% are non-families. 23.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.64 and the average family size is 3.14.

In the town the population is spread out with 26.9% under the age of 18, 6.9% from 18 to 24, 30.4% from 25 to 44, 24.8% from 45 to 64, and 10.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 101.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 97.2 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $41,726, and the median income for a family is $49,615. Males have a median income of $40,811 versus $28,329 for females. The per capita income for the town is $19,451. 10.3% of the population and 7.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 10.0% of those under the age of 18 and 9.2% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
