Maysville is a city located in Mason County, Kentucky. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 8,993. It is the county seat of Mason CountyTemplate:GR.

Maysville is located at 38°38'38" North, 83°46'33" West (38.643920, -83.775890)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 57.6 km² (22.2 mi²). 51.6 km² (19.9 mi²) of it is land and 6.1 km² (2.3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 10.52% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 8,993 people, 3,856 households, and 2,406 families residing in the city. The population density is 174.4/km² (451.6/mi²). There are 4,416 housing units at an average density of 85.6/km² (221.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 86.00% White, 11.54% African American, 0.14% Native American, 0.60% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.50% from other races, and 1.18% from two or more races. 0.86% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 3,856 households out of which 27.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.5% are married couples living together, 14.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 37.6% are non-families. 33.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 16.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.25 and the average family size is 2.85.

In the city the population is spread out with 22.7% under the age of 18, 8.1% from 18 to 24, 26.6% from 25 to 44, 23.5% from 45 to 64, and 19.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 85.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 80.7 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $27,813, and the median income for a family is $37,684. Males have a median income of $31,975 versus $20,775 for females. The per capita income for the city is $16,836. 18.9% of the population and 14.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 27.1% of those under the age of 18 and 16.2% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
