McClain County is a county located in the state of Oklahoma. As of 2000, the population is 27,740. Its county seat is Purcell6. McClain County is part of the Oklahoma City Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county, roughly triangular in shape, has a total area of 1,503 km² (580 mi²). 1,475 km² (570 mi²) of it is land and 27 km² (10 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.80% water.

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 27,740 people, 10,331 households, and 8,037 families residing in the county. The population density is 19/km² (49/mi²). There are 11,189 housing units at an average density of 8/km² (20/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 87.26% White, 0.66% Black or African American, 5.61% Native American, 0.22% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 2.24% from other races, and 3.98% from two or more races. 4.86% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 10,331 households out of which 36.00% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 65.30% are married couples living together, 9.00% have a female householder with no husband present, and 22.20% are non-families. 19.40% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.40% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.66 and the average family size is 3.04.

In the county, the population is spread out with 26.80% under the age of 18, 8.10% from 18 to 24, 29.00% from 25 to 44, 24.00% from 45 to 64, and 12.00% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 98.60 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 96.10 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $37,275, and the median income for a family is $42,487. Males have a median income of $31,062 versus $21,506 for females. The per capita income for the county is $18,158. 10.50% of the population and 8.30% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 13.40% of those under the age of 18 and 8.80% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
