Medgidia is placed between the Danube and the Black Sea, 39 km far from Constanta, the town is the center of a road and rail knot, from East to West and from North to South. Its geological specific allowed the Canal to cross from Constanta to the Danube, thus being linked by the rivers Rhine – Main – Danube directly to the center of Europe till Rotterdam. The general aspect of the relief is of a plateau, with reduced height. The earth has a limestone structure, covered with thick deposits of Loess. The climate is temperate-continental, with short and cold winters and warm summers. The natural resources of the earth are made of limestone deposits and kaolin sand. The water resources are deep into the earth. The limestone structure of the earth permits a natural filter of the water web thus the water has a special quality With an area of almost 100 square kilometres, the town hosts as many as 43.634 inhabitants, in 8,300 block flats and 8,900 houses. Besides a network of 100 km of paved roads and 95 km of sewage network, the town hosts an annual fair, cattle fair and 6 markets.

Local administration

Medgidia was declared town in 1994. The town infrastructure are continuously developing and offer the inhabitants unusual resources for such an important town: 4 high schools, 8 primary schools, 12 nurseries, 4 cultural centers with a hall for cultural activities, 2 show and cinema halls, 3 club and 5 libraries. Sports activities have not skipped over: there is a 30,000 - seat stadium, a sports hall and a swimming pool. Medgidia also has 500 bed hospitals, 18 surgeries of which 3 belong to enterprises, 5 pharmacies and also cable television.

Opportunities

Beside its dynamics, logistic and population wish to cooperate with US and European enterprises, the town offers financial advantages and sites to the settling enterprises: •methane supply network in the town

•in the northern industrial area (400,000 m²) favorable for agricultural purposes

•warehouses – for milling and bakery, cereal products, fruit and vegetable processing, as well as motorcars

•the free trade area allows the setting up of assembling factories, storehouses and dispatch platforms

•likewise, along the canal (160,000 m²) there are opportunities for the development of tourist and sports activities next to the Cement Factory, there are 75,000 m² available for construction materials and various storehouses

•along the highway, there are 500,000 m² available for new industrial activities

•200,000 m² along the highway allow house building or commercial economic construction works – namely average size supermarkets

Tourism in Medgidia

Art Museum "Lucian Grigorescu"

It was opened in 1964 with expositions from the Romanian our aged plastic creations: painting, sculpture, and graphic, signed by Lucian Grigorescu, Marius Bunescu, Ion Jalea and others. In 1971 it was reorganized and structured on a major inspiring reason in the Romanian - landscape art, by a group made from the most valuable plastic artists Ion Jalea, Spiru Chintila, Ion Pacea, Ion Bitan. The permanent exposition of the museum takes in classic and modern artworks but also artworks of our age art classics: Lucian Grigorescu, Nicolae Tonitza, Francisc Sirato, Stefan Dumitrescu, Iosif Iser. From 1991, the museum was named after the great Romanian painter Lucian Grigorescu who was appreciated as the most Latin from the Romanian painters, the creator of a bridge between the local civilization and the civilization of the whole world. The museum also has a collection of ceramic artworks. Every year at 1-st of February is organized homage manifestations and expositions of the wellknown artist.

The Orthodox Church "SF. Petru and Pavel"

The church is made of brick, in roman-Greece style and is dating from 1890, having as creator the priest Cristache Georgescu, under the rein of the King Carol the I-St. The building was raised with the contribution of the Christian people and build on the ruins of a roman cestrum. Roman cestrum - is representing the place where the Romans were putting at safe place the ammunitions and the wounded, and probably that's why it was preferred this placement. In the altar of the church exists even today a plate where is an inscription with this text: " In 1890, month July 20, was put the base of the Orthodox Roman Church, in Medgidia, with the patron Saint Petru and Pavel, under the rein of the King Carol the I-St.

The Mosque "Abdul Medgid"

Built in 1860 even today exists as an historic and architectural monument. It was raised in the memory of the sultan Abdul Medgid who reigned in the period 1839-1861. Abdul Medgid proved with his acts that is more open minded than his predecessors at progress and democracy. He institutes the "Megidie" decoration with who compensates many Romanian personalities upon the painter Theodor Aman. The building was executed and cared by the Ottoman Government and from the beginning was served by an imam, a hatpin, and a muezzin. The building respects the traditional form of the Moslem cultural placements, decorated in the interior with oriental ornaments and inscriptions in Arabian language.

The Serbian Heroes Monument

In 1926 at Medgidia was commemorated the heroism of the Serbian division which fight in Dobrogea in the World's First War and inaugurated a monument which has its mission to extol for the next generations, one of the tragic and glorious acts of that war. With this occasion was prepared a big solemnity with the participation of Romanian and Yugoslavian officials and were deposited flower crowns from the Serbian and Romanian royal families. From then, many Serbian personalities, members of the Romanian - Serbian friendship associations, of the Serbian Consulate, have visited the monument.

Ceramic Exposition

In 1971, the Plastic Artists Union from Romania takes the initiative of concept of a general program of integration of the art in the social life. The exposed artworks constitutes decorative ceramic structures which looks like they are raised in the middle of the park vegetation, creating an museum ensemble in open air, unique in Europe. The objectives have the capacity to communicate in a special degree through the language of the symbols. They accomplish in general decorative functions but also utile being made from the geometric forms, capricious with referrals at mineral structures, bimorphs, and anthropomorphism or from serial forms assembled in combinations of elements deciphering metaphorical senses, allegorical and fantastic. The artworks are put in some principal urban zones: Central Park, through the long cliff of the Danube –Black Sea Canal, Art museum "Lucian Grigorescu”.

Sports complex

Hotel, stadium, skating ring, sport hall, swimming pool, pool, handball field, tennis fields. The Stadium - has over 32000 places in tribunes, an athletic trail, volleyball fields, recovering pools, sauna, and modern locker rooms. It can easily be compared with other stadiums from countries with sportive traditions, like Greece. The Multi-Purpose Hall has 750 places and a modern illumination and takes in every year local, county and national competitions. The swimming pool has the dimensions 50/21 meters, with 8 passages and was inaugurated by the wellknown swimming personality Carmen Bunaciu. The hotel has a capacity of 100 places with single chambers and two beds chambers, modern utilities (color TV, cable, heat water, phone and luxurious furniture),own thermal central. Bar and restaurant - capacity 100 places where is served traditional Romanian food for the most various tastes, matched with the wines from the Dobrodgian fields. In a single place you will find all what you need to organize competitions, even at international rang.

History

Remains prove that Dobroudja was inhabited since the Neolithic period. In 46 BC it was administrated by the Roman Empire. Site and cast rum both called the Carasu Valley was built there, becoming the cradle of the town. In 1417, the Turkish invades Dobroudja. From the 15th century onwards starts a colonization process with the Muslim population. The Ottomans reign for 3 centuries, in the region there were 10 000 Christians (Rumains, Jews, Greeks). At the end of the war between Russia and Turkey, the sultan Abdul Medgid repopulated the region of Carasu. In 1865 its inhabitants ask the governor of Dobroudja to name it Medgidia as a tribute to their protector. After the Independence War (1877-1878), Dobroudja is reinstated to Rumania. Medgidia‘s fair starts again and gets organized.

Events


"Graiul Dobrogei" is the title of a monthly magazine because it opens a necessary dialogue between the local administration and the citizens. Each month, a title of "Adult citizen” is established to all the youngsters that become legally adult, all this in a festive way, in the Town Hall and their names are mentioned in the local newspaper. "Golden Weddings” – the Local Council adopted a decision to celebrate the couple who anniversary 50 years together. So, they are invited at the City Hall and meet the Mayor who presents them an official certificate and a prize.

Medgidia Festival This event has been celebrated again, ever since 1999, at the end of October and thousands of Medgidia‘s and people around Medgidia take part in it. The town has become the scene of cultural animations, high-lighting the spiritual identity of the region. The program was planed for all tastes and for all ages: students, elderly people, artists, poets, athletes, businessmen, farmers and collectors. Nobody is overlooked. Numerous prizes were given to youngsters. During this period, music is combined with lights and colors of fire works. For one week, we all gain hope for the future.
