Menomonie, Wisconsin

Menomonie is a city in western Wisconsin. It is the county seat of Dunn County, Wisconsin. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 14,937. The city is located partially within the Town of Menomonie.

Together with surrounding communities, the Menomonie micropolitan area was, according to the 2000 census, home to 21,900 people. The city forms the core of the United States Census Bureau's Menomonie Micropolitan Statistical Area, which includes all of Dunn County (2000 population: 39,858). The Menomonie mSA, together with the Eau Claire metropolitan area to the east, forms the Census Bureau's Eau Claire-Menomonie Consolidated Metropolitan Statistical Area.

The city center is located at the south end of Lake Menomin, a reservoir on the Red Cedar River.

Menomonie is the home of the University of Wisconsin-Stout.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 37.8 km² (14.6 mi²). 33.3 km² (12.9 mi²) of it is land and 4.5 km² (1.7 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 11.91% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 14,937 people, 5,119 households, and 2,370 families residing in the city. The population density is 448.1/km² (1,160.7/mi²). There are 5,441 housing units at an average density of 163.2/km² (422.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 93.79% White, 0.76% Black or African American, 0.41% Native American, 3.21% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.64% from other races, and 1.18% from two or more races. 1.14% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 5,119 households out of which 22.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 36.0% are married couples living together, 7.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 53.7% are non-families. 32.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.35 and the average family size is 2.95.

In the city the population is spread out with 15.5% under the age of 18, 40.4% from 18 to 24, 20.5% from 25 to 44, 12.3% from 45 to 64, and 11.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 23 years. For every 100 females there are 99.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 98.6 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $31,103, and the median income for a family is $44,458. Males have a median income of $30,893 versus $21,898 for females. The per capita income for the city is $15,994. 23.5% of the population and 9.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 16.7% of those under the age of 18 and 7.3% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
