Monroe is a city located in Walton County, Georgia. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 11,409. The city is the county seat of Walton CountyTemplate:GR.

Monroe is located at 33°47'36" North, 83°42'39" West (33.793295, -83.710790)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 27.1 km² (10.5 mi²). 26.8 km² (10.4 mi²) of it is land and 0.3 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.05% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 11,407 people, 4,287 households, and 2,983 families residing in the city. The population density is 425.1/km² (1,101.3/mi²). There are 4,637 housing units at an average density of 172.8/km² (447.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 54.69% White, 42.24% African American, 0.21% Native American, 0.36% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 1.26% from other races, and 1.20% from two or more races. 2.52% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 4,287 households out of which 33.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 39.2% are married couples living together, 25.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.4% are non-families. 25.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.59 and the average family size is 3.07.

In the city the population is spread out with 28.7% under the age of 18, 10.7% from 18 to 24, 28.6% from 25 to 44, 19.2% from 45 to 64, and 12.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 32 years. For every 100 females there are 83.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 80.1 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $27,500, and the median income for a family is $31,568. Males have a median income of $30,717 versus $23,028 for females. The per capita income for the city is $14,823. 22.9% of the population and 19.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 34.2% of those under the age of 18 and 17.1% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
