Montevallo is a college town located in Shelby County, Alabama. It serves as the home of the University of Montevallo, a public liberal arts university with around 3000 students. As of the 2000 census, the population of the city of Montevallo is 4,825.

Geography
Montevallo is located at 33°6'18" North, 86°51'46" West (33.104927, -86.862817)Template:GR.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 19.7 km² (7.6 mi²). 19.6 km² (7.6 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.66% water.
Demographics
As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 4,825 people, 1,711 households, and 946 families residing in the city. The population density is 246.4/km² (638.5/mi²). There are 1,897 housing units at an average density of 96.9/km² (251.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 72.54% White, 25.89% Black or African American, 0.39% Native American, 0.39% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 0.15% from other races, and 0.58% from two or more races. 1.58% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 1,711 households out of which 25.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 37.4% are married couples living together, 15.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 44.7% are non-families. 30.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.30 and the average family size is 2.96.
In the city the population is spread out with 18.3% under the age of 18, 36.0% from 18 to 24, 21.8% from 25 to 44, 14.1% from 45 to 64, and 9.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 23 years. For every 100 females there are 78.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 72.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city is $30,541, and the median income for a family is $40,164. Males have a median income of $36,222 versus $23,705 for females. The per capita income for the city is $16,468. 24.4% of the population and 14.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 27.6% of those under the age of 18 and 21.5% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Orr Park, located in Montevallo along Shoal Creek offers residents and visitors a natural recreational environment. Orr Park features a walking and bicycle trail, picnic tables (some of which are covered), restrooms, and a playground.
Orr Park features many carvings by local artist Tim Tingle. Dragons, old men, and various creatures are carved into the trees around the walking trail.
