Nashville-Davidson (balance), Tennessee

Nashville-Davidson (balance) is the name used by the U.S. Census Bureau to designate the portion of Davidson County, Tennessee that is not a part of any separately incorporated cities in the county. This portion generally corresponds to the area of the city of Nashville before the formation of the consolidated city-county Metropolitan Government of Nashville & Davidson County.

As of the 2000 census, the balance had a total population of 545,524.

Geography

The Nashville-Davidson balance is located at 36°9'17" North, 86°45'43" West (36.154838, -86.762141)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the balance has a total area of 1,287.2 km² (497.0 mi²). 1,225.9 km² (473.3 mi²) of it is land and 61.4 km² (23.7 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 4.77% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 545,524 people, 227,403 households, and 131,211 families residing in the balance. The population density is 445.0/km² (1,152.6/mi²). There are 242,451 housing units at an average density of 197.8/km² (512.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the balance is 65.91% White, 26.81% Black or African American, 0.30% Native American, 2.38% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 2.51% from other races, and 2.02% from two or more races. 4.72% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 227,403 households out of which 26.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 39.1% are married couples living together, 14.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 42.3% are non-families. 33.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.29 and the average family size is 2.96.

In the balance the population is spread out with 22.1% under the age of 18, 11.9% from 18 to 24, 34.3% from 25 to 44, 20.8% from 45 to 64, and 11.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 93.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.8 males.

The median income for a household in the balance is $39,232, and the median income for a family is $48,448. Males have a median income of $33,114 versus $27,659 for females. The per capita income for the balance is $22,018. 13.3% of the population and 10.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 19.5% of those under the age of 18 and 10.8% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
