Natick is a town located in Middlesex County, Massachusetts. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 32,170.

Natick is affectionately known by its inhabitants as the Home of Champions, recalling the performance of the town's firefighting team at the 1891 National Hook and Ladder competition (The Center for Arts in Natick (http://www.natickarts.org/tcan_history.php), May 25, 2005).

History

Natick was first settled in 1651 and was officially incorporated in 1781. John Eliot settled a group of "Praying Indians" in the southern part of the town near the Charles river. Henry Wilson, the eighteenth Vice President of the United States, lived most of his life in Natick and is buried there.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 41.6 km² (16.0 mi²). 39.1 km² (15.1 mi²) of it is land and 2.5 km² (1.0 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 6.04% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 32,170 people, 13,080 households, and 8,528 families residing in the town. The population density is 823.7/km² (2,132.9/mi²). There are 13,368 housing units at an average density of 342.3/km² (886.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 92.02% White, 1.63% African American, 0.11% Native American, 3.86% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.77% from other races, and 1.56% from two or more races. 1.97% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 13,080 households out of which 30.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.5% are married couples living together, 8.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.8% are non-families. 28.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.42 and the average family size is 3.02.

In the town the population is spread out with 23.0% under the age of 18, 5.1% from 18 to 24, 34.3% from 25 to 44, 23.3% from 45 to 64, and 14.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 89.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 85.3 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $69,755, and the median income for a family is $85,715. Males have a median income of $51,964 versus $41,060 for females. The per capita income for the town is $36,358. 2.8% of the population and 1.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 2.4% of those under the age of 18 and 5.3% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
