National Library of Wales

The National Library of Wales (Welsh: Llyfrgell Genedlaethol Cymru) is a legal deposit library in Aberystwyth, Wales. It is entitled to receive a copy of every book published in the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland and houses over 4 million printed volumes. It includes many rare books including the first book printed in Welsh in 1546 (Yny lhyvyr hwnn (http://digidol.llgc.org.uk/METS/YLH00001/frames?div=1&subdiv=0&locale=en&mode=reference)) and the first Welsh translation of the complete Bible (http://digidol.llgc.org.uk/METS/BWM00001/beibl?locale=en) in 1588. It also keeps many rare and important manuscripts including The Black Book of Carmarthen (http://www.llgc.org.uk/drych/llyfdu/llyfdu_tud01.htm) (the earliest surviving manuscript entirely in Welsh), the Book of Taliesin (http://digidol.llgc.org.uk/METS/LLT00001/frames?div=0&subdiv=0&locale=en&mode=thumbnail), and a manuscript of the works of Geoffrey Chaucer (http://www.llgc.org.uk/drych/drych_s007.htm). The Library also contains The Welsh Political Archive (http://www.llgc.org.uk/lc/awg_s_awg.htm) and The National Screen and Sound Archive of Wales (http://screenandsound.llgc.org.uk/). It also keeps maps (http://www.llgc.org.uk/dm/dm0067.htm), photographs (http://www.llgc.org.uk/dm/dm0035.htm), paintings (http://www.llgc.org.uk/dm/dm0063.htm), topographical and landscape prints (http://www.llgc.org.uk/dm/dm0104.htm), periodicals and newspapers (http://www.llgc.org.uk/lp/pb_home.htm). Many of the most important manuscripts and books have been digitized and made freely available to view on the library's website.

The library recently became victim to the theft of several precious maps, assumed to have been sold to private collectors.
