Niskayuna (town), New York

Niskayuna is a town located in Schenectady County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 20,295.

The Town of Niskayuna is located in the southeast part of the county, east of the City of Schenectady.

History

The town was formed in 1809.

Geography

The northern and eastern town lines are defined by the Mohawk River with Saratoga County, New York on the opposite bank. The south town line is Albany County, New York.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 39.0 km² (15.1 mi²). 36.5 km² (14.1 mi²) of it is land and 2.4 km² (0.9 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 6.25% water.

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 20,295 people, 7,787 households, and 5,793 families residing in the town. The population density is 555.3/km² (1,438.3/mi²). There are 8,046 housing units at an average density of 220.2/km² (570.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 90.75% White, 1.57% Black or African American, 0.09% Native American, 5.99% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.45% from other races, and 1.13% from two or more races. 1.64% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 7,787 households out of which 36.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 64.2% are married couples living together, 7.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.6% are non-families. 22.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.56 and the average family size is 3.02.

In the town the population is spread out with 26.1% under the age of 18, 4.2% from 18 to 24, 25.4% from 25 to 44, 27.1% from 45 to 64, and 17.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 93.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 87.8 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $70,800, and the median income for a family is $79,539. Males have a median income of $59,738 versus $39,692 for females. The per capita income for the town is $33,257. 3.2% of the population and 2.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 4.0% of those under the age of 18 and 3.3% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
