Olathe is a town located in Montrose County, Colorado. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 1,573.

Olathe is located at 38°36'23" North, 107°58'52" West (38.606450, -107.981054)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 3.4 km² (1.3 mi²). 3.4 km² (1.3 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 1,573 people, 520 households, and 383 families residing in the town. The population density is 456.6/km² (1,186.8/mi²). There are 571 housing units at an average density of 165.8/km² (430.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 74.44% White, 0.06% African American, 1.65% Native American, 0.32% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 19.71% from other races, and 3.81% from two or more races. 35.22% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 520 households out of which 41.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.0% are married couples living together, 10.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.3% are non-families. 22.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.88 and the average family size is 3.44.

In the town the population is spread out with 31.8% under the age of 18, 10.1% from 18 to 24, 24.7% from 25 to 44, 19.3% from 45 to 64, and 14.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 31 years. For every 100 females there are 95.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 87.1 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $26,286, and the median income for a family is $31,354. Males have a median income of $22,708 versus $18,077 for females. The per capita income for the town is $12,620. 21.8% of the population and 15.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 24.7% of those under the age of 18 and 19.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Attractions

Olathe Sweet Corn Festival (OSCF)

Since 1992, this annual town festival [1] (http://www.olathesweetcornfest.com/) has been held each summer, dedicated to the region's "agricultural jewel", Olathe Sweet Corn. The Festival features such entertaiment as craft shows, karaoke, local acts, and concerts by bigger names like Three Dog Night in 1996, Kansas in 1998, and Styx in 2004, among many others. Any proceeds go to local non-profit groups.
