Owyhee, Nevada

Owyhee is a census-designated place located in Elko County, Nevada. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 1,017.

Owyhee is also located within the Duck Valley Indian Reservation, and since the reservation is also located in southwestern Idaho, the Nevada portion of the reservation, plus Owyhee and Mountain City (located 12 miles southeast of Owyhee, and 2 miles southeast of the reservation), are in the Mountain Time Zone.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 583.9 km² (225.5 mi²). 580.9 km² (224.3 mi²) of it is land and 3.0 km² (1.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.51% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 1,017 people, 323 households, and 215 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 1.8/km² (4.5/mi²). There are 371 housing units at an average density of 0.6/km² (1.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 17.80% White, 3.54% African American, 75.02% Native American, 0.59% Asian, 0.10% Pacific Islander, 0.88% from other races, and 2.06% from two or more races. 9.05% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 323 households out of which 35.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 33.7% are married couples living together, 22.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.4% are non-families. 30.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.65 and the average family size is 3.31.

In the CDP the population is spread out with 40.5% under the age of 18, 9.4% from 18 to 24, 22.8% from 25 to 44, 19.6% from 45 to 64, and 7.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 25 years. For every 100 females there are 138.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 105.8 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP is $23,214, and the median income for a family is $28,846. Males have a median income of $31,250 versus $27,917 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $9,869. 32.4% of the population and 27.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 41.0% of those under the age of 18 and 34.5% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
