Pearl River County is a county located in the state of Mississippi. As of 2000, the population is 48,621. Its county seat is Poplarville6.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,121 km² (819 mi²). 2,101 km² (811 mi²) of it is land and 20 km² (8 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.93% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 48,621 people, 18,078 households, and 13,576 families residing in the county. The population density is 23/km² (60/mi²). There are 20,610 housing units at an average density of 10/km² (25/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 85.55% White, 12.18% Black or African American, 0.50% Native American, 0.27% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.34% from other races, and 1.13% from two or more races. 1.41% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 18,078 households out of which 34.80% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.30% are married couples living together, 12.50% have a female householder with no husband present, and 24.90% are non-families. 21.70% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.00% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.65 and the average family size is 3.08.

In the county the population is spread out with 27.00% under the age of 18, 9.40% from 18 to 24, 27.10% from 25 to 44, 23.90% from 45 to 64, and 12.60% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 94.40 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.00 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $30,912, and the median income for a family is $35,924. Males have a median income of $30,370 versus $21,519 for females. The per capita income for the county is $15,160. 18.40% of the population and 15.50% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 25.60% of those under the age of 18 and 12.50% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
