Permyakia

Permyakia or Autonomous district of the Komi-Permyaks (Russian: Ко́ми-Пермя́цкий автоно́мный о́круг) is a federal subject of Russia (an autonomous district). It is an administrative subdivision for Komi-Permyaks, a branch of the Komis, within Perm Oblast of the Russian Federation. Administrative center: Kudymkar. Area: 32,770 km². Location: foothills of Ural mountains, upper basin of Kama River. Established: February 26, 1925. Population: 136,076 (2002 census).

Other notable settlements: Pozhva urban settlement(Пожва).

After a referendum held in 2004, Permyakia will be merged with Perm Oblast to form Perm Krai, which is scheduled to come into existence on December 1, 2005.

Permyakia is located in the Yekaterinburg Time Zone (YEKT/YEKST). UTC offset is +0500 (YEKT)/+0600 (YEKST).

Demographics

Population (2002): 136,076

Ethnic groups: As of the 2002 census most residents consider themselves either Komi-Permyaks (80,327 or 59%) or ethnic Russians (51,946 or 38%). The rest indentified themselves as belonging to 55 different ethnic groups, most prominent being the Tatars at 1,100 (0.8%), the Ukrainians at 706 (0.51%) and the Belarusians at 672 (0.49%).
