Phenix City, Alabama

Phenix City is a city located mostly in Russell County, Alabama, and partly in Lee County. As of the 2000 census, the population of the city is 28,265. The city is the county seat of Russell CountyTemplate:GR. It is also a suburb immediately west of downtown Columbus, Georgia, just across the Chattahoochee River.

In 1955, it won the All-America City Award from the National Municipal League.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 64.1 km² (24.8 mi²). 63.7 km² (24.6 mi²) of it is land and 0.4 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.61% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 28,265 people, 11,517 households, and 7,566 families residing in the city. The population density is 443.6/km² (1,149.1/mi²). There are 13,250 housing units at an average density of 208.0/km² (538.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 52.94% White, 44.97% Black or African American, 0.23% Native American, 0.53% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.56% from other races, and 0.76% from two or more races. 1.49% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 11,517 households out of which 31.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 39.4% are married couples living together, 22.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.3% are non-families. 30.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.40 and the average family size is 2.99.

In the city the population is spread out with 26.3% under the age of 18, 9.6% from 18 to 24, 28.7% from 25 to 44, 21.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 86.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 80.4 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $26,720, and the median income for a family is $33,740. Males have a median income of $28,906 versus $21,348 for females. The per capita income for the city is $14,619. 21.3% of the population and 18.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 29.5% of those under the age of 18 and 20.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Located in the Central Time Zone on the eastern boundary, the city informally observes Eastern Time. (Many residents refer to the Central Time Zone as "slow time" and the Eastern Time Zone as "fast time.")
