Political compass chart of Canadian parties. This chart is simply a guide showing general positions of Canada's registered political parties, and is open for debate. It is not official. The horizontal axis (left-right) represents the party's positions on economic issues. The vertical axis (libertarian-authoritarian) represents the party's positions on social issues.

In contrast with the political party systems of many nations, Canadian parties at the federal level are often only loosely connected with parties at the provincial level, despite having similar names.

Northwest Territories

From approximately 1887 to 1905, political parties were active, however, legislative government was eliminated when the provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan were created out of the dominant populated area. Legislative government was reestablished circa 1963-1967, and like Nunavut, elects independent candidates and operates by consensus. Some candidates in recent years have asserted to run on behalf of the New Democratic Party, but territorial law does not recognize parties.
