Prairie County is a county located in the state of Montana. As of 2000, the population is 1,199. Its county seat is Terry6.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 4,513 km² (1,743 mi²). 4,498 km² (1,737 mi²) of it is land and 16 km² (6 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.34% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,199 people, 537 households, and 354 families residing in the county. The population density is 0/km² (1/mi²). There are 718 housing units at an average density of 0/km² (0/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 98.00% White, 0.00% Black or African American, 0.50% Native American, 0.17% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.17% from other races, and 1.17% from two or more races. 0.67% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 537 households out of which 22.30% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.10% are married couples living together, 2.40% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.90% are non-families. 31.30% of all households are made up of individuals and 17.30% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.19 and the average family size is 2.74.

In the county the population is spread out with 18.70% under the age of 18, 4.30% from 18 to 24, 20.00% from 25 to 44, 32.90% from 45 to 64, and 24.10% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 49 years. For every 100 females there are 106.70 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 106.10 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $25,451, and the median income for a family is $32,292. Males have a median income of $22,424 versus $18,833 for females. The per capita income for the county is $14,422. 17.20% of the population and 13.30% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 23.60% of those under the age of 18 and 15.50% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
