RateMyProfessors.com (RMP) is a website, founded in May 1999 by John Swapceinski, a software engineer from Menlo Park, California, which allows college/university students to "grade" the professors of American and Canadian institutions. The site contains more than three million ratings, regarding more than 500,000 professors. The site was originally launched as TeacherRatings.com and converted to RateMyProfessors in 2001.
Assistance is provided by college students all over the United States and Canada who help moderate the ratings and modify professor listings in order to ensure accuracy.
RateMyProfessors has several sister sites: RateMyTeachers.com, RateMDs.com, LawyerRatingz.com, and ClubRatingZ.com. All the sites are based on the same premise. RateMyTeachers.com is geared towards high school students. RateMDs.com was launched in 2004, and is geared towards patients who wish to leave ratings concerning their doctors. LawyerRatingZ.com was launched in 2005 and created so people could rate their lawyers. ClubRatingZ.com was also launched in 2005 and created so people could rate their favorite night clubs and learn about other night clubs.
RateMyTeachers.com launched versions for the UK and Ireland, and was the subject of huge media controversy in the latter, with the main secondary teachers union seeking legal advice. They, however, pulled out upon finding the site was hosted in the United States and hence not subject to Irish slander laws.
