Red Lake CDP is a census-designated place (CDP) within the Lower Red Lake unorganized teritory located in Beltrami County, Minnesota, USA. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 1,430. It is part of the Red Lake Indian Reservation.

The United States Census Bureau uses the CDP designation as a reporting mechanism to provide area and population values for a more densely settled community within the much larger, and less populated territory. The values reported here are included in the aggregate numbers reported for the territory as a whole. See: Lower Red Lake, Minnesota.

Red Lake became known internationally due to the Red Lake High School massacre on March 21, 2005 in which high school student Jeff Weise killed 10 people and injured 14 others before committing suicide.

According to the U.S. Census, the CDP has a total area of 34.7 km² (13.4 mi²). 33.6 km² (13.0 mi²) of it is land and 1.1 km² (0.4 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.06% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,430 people, 400 households, and 320 families residing in the community. The population density is 42.5/km² (110.2/mi²). There are 421 housing units at an average density of 12.5/km² (32.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 1.82% White, 0.28% Black or African American, 97.69% Native American, 0.07% from other races, and 0.14% from two or more races. 1.47% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 400 households out of which 49.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 24.5% are married couples living together, 42.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 20.0% are non-families. 18.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 4.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.53 and the average family size is 3.88.

In the CDP the population is spread out with 44.1% under the age of 18, 12.0% from 18 to 24, 24.1% from 25 to 44, 15.6% from 45 to 64, and 4.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 21 years. For every 100 females there are 94.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 84.3 males.

The median income for a household is $23,224, and the median income for a family is $20,800. Males have a median income of $22,257 versus $22,431 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $8,787. 36.4% of the population and 36.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 42.8% of those under the age of 18 and 44.4% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

History

School massacre

Main article: Red Lake High School massacre

On 21 March 2005 Jeff Weise, a student at Red Lake High School, shot dead 10 people and injured several more. The gunman also killed himself. This was the worst U.S. school shooting since the Columbine High School massacre wherein Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold killed 12 people and injured 23 people.
