Reykjanes, meaning the fuming area, is marked by the active volcanism under its surface. The big lava fields covering it are showing only scarce vegetation. The earth is actually "fuming" or emitting vapour of different kinds, at the hot springs and sulphur springs in the south of Reykjanes, around the Kleifarvatn and Krýsuvík. There is also a big geothermal power station at Svartsengi. Not far from the power station, a well renowned and modern swimming pool has been installed using the hot and mineralized water coming down from the power station and out of the earth: the so-called Blue Lagoon (Bláa Lóniđ).

Some fishing towns like Grindavík or Njarđvík are situated on the peninsula as well as the town Keflavík with the American military base and the International Airport Leifur Eriksson.
