Ridgway, Colorado

Ridgway is a town located in Ouray County, Colorado. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 713. The area is famous as the filming site of the John Wayne western movie True Grit, and still has a True Grit Cafe, full of John Wayne memorabilia.

Ridgway began as a railroad town, serving the close mining towns of Telluride and Ouray, pronounced yu-ray. Ridgway was named after railroad superintendent Robert M. Ridgway.

The Uncompahgre River runs through the town, and provides ample trout fishing for its residents, as does the Ridgway State Park and Reservoir, just north of Ridgway a mile or two.

Wildlife is ample; deer, elk, bear, coyotes and eagles are a common sight in and around town.

Ridgway is located at 38°9'7" North, 107°45'25" West (38.151934, -107.756870)Template:GR, at an altitude of 6900 feet.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 5.2 km² (2.0 mi²). 5.2 km² (2.0 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 713 people, 285 households, and 190 families residing in the town. The population density is 137.6/km² (356.1/mi²). There are 318 housing units at an average density of 61.4/km² (158.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 94.25% White, 0.00% African American, 1.82% Native American, 0.28% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.70% from other races, and 2.95% from two or more races. 4.77% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 285 households out of which 38.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.5% are married couples living together, 10.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.0% are non-families. 24.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 2.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.50 and the average family size is 2.97.

In the town the population is spread out with 28.8% under the age of 18, 4.8% from 18 to 24, 34.2% from 25 to 44, 26.6% from 45 to 64, and 5.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 102.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 95.4 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $40,903, and the median income for a family is $45,208. Males have a median income of $31,597 versus $26,250 for females. The per capita income for the town is $20,084. 4.3% of the population and 3.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 6.9% of those under the age of 18 and 0.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
