River Ridge is a census-designated place and town located in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, on the East Bank of the Mississippi River, just below Kenner, Louisiana. River Ridge is part of the Greater New Orleans Metropolitan area. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 14,588.

River Ridge is located at 29°57'43" North, 90°13'4" West (29.961875, -90.217696)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 9.2 km² (3.6 mi²). 7.3 km² (2.8 mi²) of it is land and 1.9 km² (0.8 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 21.07% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 14,588 people, 6,030 households, and 4,082 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 1,997.3/km² (5,181.6/mi²). There are 6,325 housing units at an average density of 866.0/km² (2,246.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 86.76% White, 10.99% African American, 0.23% Native American, 0.78% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.45% from other races, and 0.76% from two or more races. 2.92% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 6,030 households out of which 27.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.8% are married couples living together, 10.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.3% are non-families. 27.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.42 and the average family size is 2.99.

In the CDP the population is spread out with 22.7% under the age of 18, 6.9% from 18 to 24, 28.4% from 25 to 44, 25.6% from 45 to 64, and 16.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 91.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 88.6 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP is $46,286, and the median income for a family is $58,139. Males have a median income of $44,211 versus $28,285 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $27,088. 8.9% of the population and 6.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 13.0% of those under the age of 18 and 6.2% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Amenities

River Ridge has the elementary school of St. Matthew. River Ridge has easy access to Jefferson Highway, Airline Highway, and many other important roads in New Orleans. Much of it is situated near the Mississippi River. Paradise Manor Country Club is the swimming pool for River Ridge. Many of the highschools of New Orleans are close by such as Rummel Highschool, Archbishop Chapelle, Jesuit Highschool, and Dominican Highschool.
