Roanoke, Illinois

Roanoke is a village located in Woodford County, Illinois. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 1,994.

On Tuesday, July 13th, 2004, a tornado with a reported width of a quarter mile struck the village of Roanoke with winds of up to 206 mph, damaging much of the area and causing widespread power outages. The worst damage was the destruction of Parson's Manufacturing plant. There were no casualties and only minor injuries. The tornado was later rated as an F4 on the Fujita scale.

Geography

Roanoke is located at 40°47'51" North, 89°11'59" West (40.797421, -89.199784)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 2.5 km² (0.9 mi²). 2.4 km² (0.9 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 4.21% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 1,994 people, 765 households, and 559 families residing in the village. The population density is 846.0/km² (2,192.0/mi²). There are 809 housing units at an average density of 343.2/km² (889.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 99.15% White, 0.10% African American, 0.10% Native American, 0.05% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.10% from other races, and 0.50% from two or more races. 0.15% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 765 households out of which 31.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 64.6% are married couples living together, 6.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.8% are non-families. 25.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.52 and the average family size is 3.00.

In the village the population is spread out with 24.3% under the age of 18, 7.6% from 18 to 24, 24.8% from 25 to 44, 21.4% from 45 to 64, and 21.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 96.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.5 males.

The median income for a household in the village is $43,125, and the median income for a family is $54,750. Males have a median income of $38,375 versus $22,614 for females. The per capita income for the village is $24,489. 4.9% of the population and 2.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 6.3% of those under the age of 18 and 2.5% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
