Roscoe, Illinois

Roscoe is a village located in Winnebago County, Illinois, a suburb of Rockford. The village is in a rural area along the Rock River. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 6,244; however, the area is undergoing a period of rapid growth, and Census Bureau workers in 2005 estimated that the population is now about 10,000. The four public schools in Roscoe are part of the Kinnikinnick School District. These are Ledgewood School (grades K-3), Stone Creek School (grades K-3), Kinnikinnick School (grades 4-5), and Roscoe Middle School (grades 6-8). There is no public high school in the village, so high school students attending a public school must travel outside Roscoe. This high school is Hononnegah High School, a school located in the neighboring town of Rockton, Illinois. Hononnegah is made up of students from Rockton's Steven Mack Middle School (The second largest feeder), Roscoe Middle School (The largest feeder), Shirland School (The smallest feeder), and South Beloit's and Roscoe's Praire Hill School (The third-largest feeder).

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 24.1 km² (9.3 mi²). 24.0 km² (9.2 mi²) of it is land and 0.2 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.75% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 6,244 people, 2,211 households, and 1,740 families residing in the village. The population density is 260.6/km² (675.1/mi²). There are 2,277 housing units at an average density of 95.0/km² (246.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 95.26% White, 1.91% African American, 0.22% Native American, 0.82% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.74% from other races, and 1.04% from two or more races. 2.50% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 2,211 households out of which 44.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 67.4% are married couples living together, 7.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 21.3% are non-families. 16.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 4.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.82 and the average family size is 3.19.

In the village the population is spread out with 31.7% under the age of 18, 6.5% from 18 to 24, 35.6% from 25 to 44, 19.6% from 45 to 64, and 6.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 33 years. For every 100 females there are 99.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 99.3 males.

The median income for a household in the village is $59,267, and the median income for a family is $61,515. Males have a median income of $48,356 versus $30,060 for females. The per capita income for the village is $25,324. 2.9% of the population and 1.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 2.1% of those under the age of 18 and 0.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
