Sag Harbor, New York

Sag Harbor is a village located in Suffolk County, New York, shared by the towns of East Hampton and Southampton. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 2,313.

The Village of Sag Harbor is on the western town line of East Hampton, which is the eastern town line of Southampton.

Geography

Sag Harbor is located at 40°59'48" North, 72°17'32" West (40.996603, -72.292190)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 6.4 km² (2.5 mi²). 4.5 km² (1.7 mi²) of it is land and 1.9 km² (0.8 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 30.36% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 2,313 people, 1,120 households, and 583 families residing in the village. The population density is 519.2/km² (1,345.1/mi²). There are 1,942 housing units at an average density of 435.9/km² (1,129.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 85.78% White, 7.44% African American, 0.52% Native American, 0.95% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 2.72% from other races, and 2.59% from two or more races. 7.31% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,120 households out of which 18.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 39.6% are married couples living together, 9.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 47.9% are non-families. 40.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 18.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.06 and the average family size is 2.81.

In the village the population is spread out with 16.5% under the age of 18, 5.4% from 18 to 24, 25.4% from 25 to 44, 28.6% from 45 to 64, and 24.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 46 years. For every 100 females there are 91.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.8 males.

The median income for a household in the village is $52,275, and the median income for a family is $70,536. Males have a median income of $41,181 versus $34,750 for females. The per capita income for the village is $40,566. 4.2% of the population and 1.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 1.9% of those under the age of 18 and 3.8% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

History

Sag Harbor was founded in 1707. It is a town with a history of whaling, earning a mention in the book Moby Dick by Herman Melville. It was the first designated point of entry for customs in New York, and once a busier port than New York City. After the fall of whaling, Sag Harbor served as home to various industrial business, the last of which was the Bulova Watchcase Factory, which closed in 1981.

Sag Harbor also served as author John Steinbeck's residence from 1955 until his death in 1968.
