Sanders County is a county located in the state of Montana. As of 2000, the population is 10,227. Its county seat is Thompson Falls6.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 7,226 km² (2,790 mi²). 7,154 km² (2,762 mi²) of it is land and 72 km² (28 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.00% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 10,227 people, 4,273 households, and 2,897 families residing in the county. The population density is 1/km² (4/mi²). There are 5,271 housing units at an average density of 1/km² (2/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 91.91% White, 0.13% Black or African American, 4.74% Native American, 0.30% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.26% from other races, and 2.64% from two or more races. 1.55% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 4,273 households out of which 26.20% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.30% are married couples living together, 7.10% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.20% are non-families. 28.00% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.60% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.35 and the average family size is 2.86.

In the county the population is spread out with 23.80% under the age of 18, 5.50% from 18 to 24, 22.10% from 25 to 44, 31.80% from 45 to 64, and 16.90% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 44 years. For every 100 females there are 102.10 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 100.50 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $26,852, and the median income for a family is $31,340. Males have a median income of $28,340 versus $17,630 for females. The per capita income for the county is $14,593. 17.20% of the population and 13.30% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 23.30% of those under the age of 18 and 9.20% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
