Senatobia, Mississippi

Senatobia is a city located in Tate County, Mississippi. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 6,682. It is the county seat of Tate CountyTemplate:GR. Senatobia is the home of The Baddour Center, a residential care agency for mentally retarded adults, and to Northwest Mississippi Community College, a two year public technical and liberal arts college. In 2004 the college had an enrollment of 4700.

The city took its name, with a slight deviation in spelling, from nearby Senatahoba Creek (senatahoba or sin-ih-toh-bih-a), which means "White Sycamore" or "Black Snake".

Geography

Senatobia is located at 34°36'59" North, 89°58'10" West (34.616452, -89.969425)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 27.9 km² (10.8 mi²). 27.8 km² (10.8 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.28% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 6,682 people, 2,137 households, and 1,498 families residing in the city. The population density is 240.0/km² (621.7/mi²). There are 2,239 housing units at an average density of 80.4/km² (208.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 68.03% White, 30.51% African American, 0.12% Native American, 0.22% Asian, 0.15% Pacific Islander, 0.24% from other races, and 0.72% from two or more races. 0.85% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 2,137 households out of which 38.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.4% are married couples living together, 19.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.9% are non-families. 26.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.60 and the average family size is 3.15.

In the city the population is spread out with 24.8% under the age of 18, 20.1% from 18 to 24, 26.0% from 25 to 44, 17.1% from 45 to 64, and 11.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 29 years. For every 100 females there are 89.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 85.4 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $33,698, and the median income for a family is $43,088. Males have a median income of $34,022 versus $22,000 for females. The per capita income for the city is $16,434. 17.7% of the population and 13.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 21.3% of those under the age of 18 and 18.5% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
