Sewanee is a census-designated place located in Franklin County, Tennessee. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 2,361. It lies on the mountainous Cumberland Plateau in the southeastern part of Middle Tennessee. It is best known as the home of The University of the South. [St. Andrew's - Sewanee School] is a private Episcopal school for grades 7 through 12. Student population includes 100 boarding and 150 day students. The Templeton Library, which is to be the repository of the papers of financier Sir John Templeton, a native of the area, has recently been built there.

Sewanee is located at 35°12'4" North, 85°55'17" West (35.201232, -85.921524)Template:GR.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 12.0 km² (4.7 mi²). 12.0 km² (4.6 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.43% water.
Demographics
As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 2,361 people, 494 households, and 302 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 196.9/km² (510.2/mi²). There are 554 housing units at an average density of 46.2/km² (119.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 93.10% White, 5.42% African American, 0.04% Native American, 0.72% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.08% from other races, and 0.59% from two or more races. 1.65% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 494 households out of which 24.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.8% are married couples living together, 7.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 38.7% are non-families. 34.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.15 and the average family size is 2.76.
In the CDP the population is spread out with 9.5% under the age of 18, 56.9% from 18 to 24, 11.3% from 25 to 44, 12.1% from 45 to 64, and 10.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 21 years. For every 100 females there are 84.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 84.5 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP is $55,625, and the median income for a family is $75,681. Males have a median income of $51,125 versus $41,518 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $16,484. 7.6% of the population and 3.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 5.2% of those under the age of 18 and 4.9% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
