Silver Bow County is a county located in the state of Montana. As of 2000, the population is 34,606. Its county seat is Butte6. In 1977, the city of Butte and county governments consolidated to form the single entity of Butte-Silver Bow City.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,862 km² (719 mi²). 1,860 km² (718 mi²) of it is land and 2 km² (1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.09% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 34,606 people, 14,432 households, and 8,933 families residing in the county. The population density is 19/km² (48/mi²). There are 16,176 housing units at an average density of 9/km² (22/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 95.35% White, 0.16% Black or African American, 2.03% Native American, 0.43% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 0.59% from other races, and 1.37% from two or more races. 2.75% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 14,432 households out of which 28.00% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.80% are married couples living together, 10.50% have a female householder with no husband present, and 38.10% are non-families. 32.80% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.70% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.32 and the average family size is 2.97.

In the county the population is spread out with 23.70% under the age of 18, 9.60% from 18 to 24, 26.70% from 25 to 44, 24.00% from 45 to 64, and 16.00% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 97.80 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 96.30 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $30,402, and the median income for a family is $40,018. Males have a median income of $31,295 versus $21,610 for females. The per capita income for the county is $17,009. 14.90% of the population and 10.70% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 19.20% of those under the age of 18 and 8.90% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
