Silverton is a city located in Marion County, Oregon. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 7,414.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 7.1 km² (2.7 mi²). 7.1 km² (2.7 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water, although Silver Creek does run through the center of town.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 7,414 people, 2,707 households, and 1,886 families residing in the city. The population density is 1,048.6/km² (2,716.3/mi²). There are 2,865 housing units at an average density of 405.2/km² (1,049.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 89.29% White, 0.22% African American, 1.11% Native American, 0.43% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 6.56% from other races, and 2.36% from two or more races. 11.56% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 2,707 households out of which 39.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.8% are married couples living together, 13.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.3% are non-families. 25.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.71 and the average family size is 3.25.

In the city the population is spread out with 31.8% under the age of 18, 9.1% from 18 to 24, 25.5% from 25 to 44, 20.3% from 45 to 64, and 13.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 33 years. For every 100 females there are 88.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 84.7 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $38,429, and the median income for a family is $46,196. Males have a median income of $34,707 versus $24,479 for females. The per capita income for the city is $18,062. 13.0% of the population and 10.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 18.7% of those under the age of 18 and 6.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Attractions

Silverton is the gateway to Silver Falls State Park, Oregon's largest state park. It has also found itself the home to the Oregon Gardens, an 80 acre (320,000 m²) botanical park. Each summer, Silvertonians celebrate their most famous citizen in the Homer Davenport Days celebration.

Other Silvertonians of note include astronaut Don Pettit, kickboxer Kim Messer, and the 1920s vagabond canine Bobbie the Wonder Dog.
