Snohomish County is a county located in the state of Washington. As of 2000, the population is 606,024. The county seat is at Everett. It is named after the Snohomish tribe.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 5,689 km² (2,196 mi²). 5,411 km² (2,089 mi²) of it is land and 278 km² (107 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 4.89% water.

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 606,024 people, 224,852 households, and 157,846 families residing in the county. The population density is 112/km² (290/mi²). There are 236,205 housing units at an average density of 44/km² (113/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 85.63% White, 1.67% Black or African American, 1.36% Native American, 5.78% Asian, 0.28% Pacific Islander, 1.92% from other races, and 3.36% from two or more races. 4.72% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 224,852 households out of which 37.30% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.00% are married couples living together, 9.80% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.80% are non-families. 22.60% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.50% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.65 and the average family size is 3.13.

In the county, the population is spread out with 27.40% under the age of 18, 8.50% from 18 to 24, 33.00% from 25 to 44, 22.00% from 45 to 64, and 9.10% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 100.10 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 98.20 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $53,060, and the median income for a family is $60,726. Males have a median income of $43,293 versus $31,386 for females. The per capita income for the county is $23,417. 6.90% of the population and 4.90% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 7.60% of those under the age of 18 and 7.80% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
