Stanford is a census-designated place (CDP) located in Santa Clara County, California. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 13,315.

The CDP of Stanford is mostly made up of Stanford University. Stanford is an unincorporated part of Santa Clara County and is adjacent to the city of Palo Alto. Stanford, California is a valid postal address, and has its own post office and zip codes: 94305 (campus buildings) and 94309 (post-office boxes).

For years, mail sent to Stanford, CA would be redirected to Stamford, Connecticut because the Post Office assumed the then-non-existent address was a misspelling.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 7.2 km² (2.8 mi²). 7.1 km² (2.8 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.44% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 13,315 people, 3,207 households, and 1,330 families residing in the community. The population density is 1,869.4/km² (4,849.8/mi²). There are 3,315 housing units at an average density of 465.4/km² (1,207.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the community is 60.40% White, 4.90% Black or African American, 0.72% Native American, 25.57% Asian, 0.16% Pacific Islander, 3.65% from other races, and 4.60% from two or more races. 8.96% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 3,207 households out of which 17.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 38.7% are married couples living together, 1.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 58.5% are non-families. 23.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 2.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.22 and the average family size is 2.73.

The age distribution is 7.2% under the age of 18, 58.5% from 18 to 24, 23.7% from 25 to 44, 6.1% from 45 to 64, and 4.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 22 years. Both the age distribution and median age are typical of college communities. For every 100 females there are 118.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 119.4 males.

The median income for a household in the community is $41,106, and the median income for a family is $88,596. Males have a median income of $67,250 versus $56,991 for females. The per capita income for the community is $22,443. 21.4% of the population and 11.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 11.6% of those under the age of 18 and 1.8% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
