Summit County is a county located in the state of Ohio. As of 2000, the population is 542,899. Its county seat is Akron6. It is named because the highest elevation on the Ohio and Erie Canal was located here.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,088 km² (420 mi²). 1,069 km² (413 mi²) of it is land and 19 km² (7 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.75% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 542,899 people, 217,788 households, and 144,611 families residing in the county. The population density is 508/km² (1,315/mi²). There are 230,880 housing units at an average density of 216/km² (559/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 83.50% White, 13.19% Black or African American, 0.20% Native American, 1.41% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.29% from other races, and 1.39% from two or more races. 0.88% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 217,788 households out of which 30.70% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.10% are married couples living together, 12.60% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.60% are non-families. 28.00% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.30% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.45 and the average family size is 3.02.

In the county, the population is spread out with 25.00% under the age of 18, 8.20% from 18 to 24, 29.60% from 25 to 44, 23.00% from 45 to 64, and 14.10% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 92.90 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.30 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $42,304, and the median income for a family is $52,200. Males have a median income of $40,117 versus $26,831 for females. The per capita income for the county is $22,842. 9.90% of the population and 7.50% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 14.00% of those under the age of 18 and 6.80% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
