Superior is a town located in Boulder County, Colorado. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 9,011.

History

Superior's history is one of coal mining. The first mines in the area were developed in the late 1800's. The Town itself was founded in 1896 and incorporated in 1904. The Town reportedly was named after the "superior" quality of coal found in the area.

Mining was the major force in Superior's history until the Industrial Mine closed in 1945. Subsequently, many people moved out of the area and the Town evolved into a quiet ranching and farming community. The Town's population hovered around 250 until recently.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 10.3 km² (4.0 mi²). 10.2 km² (4.0 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.50% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 9,011 people, 3,381 households, and 2,285 families residing in the town. The population density is 880.8/km² (2,279.2/mi²). There are 3,754 housing units at an average density of 366.9/km² (949.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 86.84% White, 1.27% African American, 0.34% Native American, 7.48% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 1.93% from other races, and 2.12% from two or more races. 4.86% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 3,381 households out of which 42.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.7% are married couples living together, 5.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.4% are non-families. 21.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 0.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.67 and the average family size is 3.20.

In the town the population is spread out with 29.4% under the age of 18, 9.2% from 18 to 24, 44.4% from 25 to 44, 15.4% from 45 to 64, and 1.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 31 years. For every 100 females there are 106.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 107.3 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $82,079, and the median income for a family is $92,543. Males have a median income of $66,265 versus $37,108 for females. The per capita income for the town is $36,326. 3.8% of the population and 2.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 1.7% of those under the age of 18 and 0.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
