IIRC, around 1960, CEO was never heard in the US (unless in courses on business administration), and "chief executive" was a periphrasis for "president" (of the US). Many companies, mostly large enough to have their stock publicly traded, have CEOs, and some also have presidents and some do not. IMO, most companies with fewer than, say, 100 employees, and perhaps many larger ones, have a president but no one with a formal title of CEO.
Title?
- IMO CEO can be a title, but it can also be a description of the job function that goes with titles like president (in companies with no CEO title), editor in chief, general manager (sports teams and performing arts companies). Another distinction of interest is implicit in the executive officer being the 2nd in command (to the captain) of a naval ship, and i think of some large land military units.

I also can't imagine that the role of CEO is well described w/o specific discussion of the relationships to the other CxOs listed at the bottom of the article.
I doubt i could successfully edit the article Chief executive officer to good effect, but i hope someone will do more with it. --Jerzy 20:41, 2004 Feb 12 (UTC)
