Sweelinck is an interesting figure especially as he exemplifies the kinds of artistic expression possible during the religious conflicts at the time--what was possible to write in a Calvinist culture was quite different from what could be written under the influence of the Counter-Reformation. Victoria, Shakespeare, and Cervantes were all contemporaries of his. He's a fascinating guy and I think he probably crossed the Channel a lot and knew most of the English composers of the time.
