Initially, its focus was on law and politics, but later it expanded to offer courses in social sciences and humanities. Over the past 70 years, the University has producing a large number of graduates who have greatly contributed to the development and progress of both the society and the country.

Since 1934, 220.000 students have attended the university. These are also including seven Thailand's Prime Ministers, top level politicians and officers, Bank of Thailand's Governors, as well as most of the city's governors are graduated from Thammasat university. At Phrachan campus, with its small size but big history, Thammasat university's students have played several crucial roles to the development of the country's democratisation. These leaded to several times massacres at the campus and its area around. The main turning point of Thaialnd's history was also on October 6, 1976, when a brutal massacre by soldier and police on the university students took place.

Until recently, Phrachan campus's still the main symbol for the Human Rights, Free voices, as well as Democratic Society in Thailand. Also, from the first day until recently, Thammasat students and its society always having and using their rights, freedom, openness, and free voices inside the university, that those other top universities in Thailand could never provide.
