The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes

The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes is a collection of twelve Sherlock Holmes stories by Arthur Conan Doyle, illustrated by Sidney Paget, that were originally published in the Strand Magazine from July 1891 to June 1892. The book was published on October 14, 1892 by George Newnes Ltd. and on October 15 in an US edition by Harper. The initial combined print run was 14,500 copies.

It was banned in the Soviet Union in 1929 for occultism, although the book shows few to no signs of such material. However, later this ban was cancelled.

The twelve stories in this collection are:

The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes is also the title of a long-running television series about Arthur Conan Doyle's detective character, produced by Granada Television in England between 1984 and 1994.

The series starred Jeremy Brett as Sherlock Holmes, with first David Burke and then Edward Hardwicke as Doctor Watson. There were 36, hour-long episodes and four full-length films produced. All but nineteen of the Conan Doyle stories were filmed before the premature death of Jeremy Brett from a heart attack in 1995.

Many regard Brett's performance as a near-perfect portrayal of Holmes, although his portrayal, masterly as it is, of Holmes as neurotic and arrogant is grossly at odds with Doyle's descriptions of Holmes as suave and congenial. Brett and Hardwicke reprised their roles as Holmes and Watson in 1988-89 in a West End stage play, The Secret of Sherlock Holmes, written by Jeremy Paul.

A full sized Edwardian street was specially constructed at Granada Studios, Manchester for the production.

The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes is also the name of a Sherlock Holmes movie, this movie is the second one to feature Basil Rathbone as Holmes and Nigel Bruce as Doctor Watson. Also notable is George Zucco as Professor Moriarty, who steals the show as he terrifies his hapless minions. It is arguably one of the better movies in the series, with a good cast, and a baffling mystery featuring South American gauchos, The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, and the Crown Jewels.
