The Glory and the Dream was a truly outstanding history of the United States from 1932 - 1972. Manchester, writing in the mid-1970s, when Watergate and Vietnam had caused many in America to question our national direction, created a superb statement of the emergence of modern America from the depths of the depression. The very few things that Manchester gets wrong, such as his belief that Hollywood had been destroyed by television, only serve to demonstrate how well this book has aged in the past 30 years. With detailed portraits of key individuals and what can only be called 'pop culture' interspersed with Manchester's laudable prose and impeccable history, this is the sort of book that should be on everyone's shelf.
