Generation One

Ultra Magnus is introduced in Transformers: The Movie as commander of Autobot City on Earth. Magnus is characterized by his no-nonsense attitude, his willingness to obey orders and his reluctance to take leadership himself. His robotic form is armored and armed with two missile launchers in addition to a standard issue ion rifle. For a time following The Battle of Autobot City, and the death of Optimus Prime, Ultra Magnus became the leader of the Autobots, having been appointed to the position by Optimus Prime on his death bed and given the Autobot Matrix of Leadership. Subsequently, in a confrontation with the Decepticons on the planet of Junk, Magnus was blown apart and lost the Matrix to Galvatron, but was reassembled and reactivated by the Junkions. Ultra Magnus relinquished command when Hot Rod recovered the Matrix from Galvatron and became Rodimus Prime, Ultra Magnus, and continued to act as his friend and advisor.

In the Japanese series, Headmasters, Ultra Magnus met his end battling the Decepticon Six-Changer, Sixshot, who killed him.

Ultra Magnus transforms into a car carrier. Although it was never displayed in any of the original cartoons or comics, only in his toy incarnation, he is comprised of a smaller robot, identical in appearance to Optimus Prime, aside from a white colour scheme, who dons the larger armour which comprises his trailer.

It has been theorised that Ultra Magnus may have formerly been Dion, best friend of Orion Pax, the former self of Optimus Prime, as seen in the episode, War Dawn. Prime's reference to Magnus as an "old friend" supports this, and the Dreamwave comics also went this route in 2003 when their second comic miniseries named the team under Magnus's command as "Team Dion." Additionally, this miniseries was the first story to feature Magnus in his un-amoured form, and has since created quite a degree of publicity for it, leading to the release of a repaint of the 20th Anniversary Prime toy in it's colours, as well as a World's Smallest Figure, and a Transformers Universe repaint in it's style of the Transformers: Armada deluxe Optimus Prime figure.

Transformers: Robots in Disguise

Known as God Magnus in Japan.

When his brother, Optimus Prime (Fire Convoy), was chosen to carry the Matrix, Magnus felt passed over, and was left carrying a grudge against his brother that eventually exploded into violence when he arrived on Earth with the intention of taking what he believed was rightfully his, by force, if necessary. Severely injuring Prime, who refused to fight back, Magnus tracked him to a desert island, where he pretended to offer him the hand of friendship, only to attempt to absorb the Matrix for himself, forcing the brothers into the combined form of Omega Prime (God Fire Convoy). Through this link, Magnus was also able to channel the power of the Matrix, which he used to supercharge the Autobot Brothers into newly-coloured forms. Although Magnus remained a free agent, refusing to take orders from his brother, his animosity dwindled and he frequently helped the Autobots by combining with Prime to battle the Predacons and Decepticons.

Transformers: Armada

The character named Overload in his combined form was known as Ultra Magnus in the Japanese Continuty. This character provided additional firepower to Optimus Prime and could allow Prime to carry Jetfire, were he injured.

Transformers: Energon

At the beginning of the Transformers: Energon toyline, the Armada Overload toy was repainted and re-released under the name Ultra Magnus. He did not make an appearance outside of the Energon toyline.
