Founded on March 28, 1890 as the State Land-Grant College, the school changed names to the State College of Washington in 1905, and, subsequently, in 1959, to Washington State University. As a land grant institution, the university has been trusted by the state since statehood with 190,000 acres (769 km²) of land for agricultural and scientific research throughout the Pacific Northwest.

Campus

The 620 acre (2.5 km²) Pullman campus is located on College Hill in Pullman, a college town which is notable for its hilly environment. Surrounding the campus and town are the rolling wheat fields of the Palouse.
