Waupaca, Wisconsin

Waupaca is a city located in Waupaca County in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 5,676. The city is located mostly within the Town of Waupaca, though it is politically independent. A portion extends east into the adjacent Town of Farmington and there is also a noncontiguous area of the city in the Town of Lind to the south.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 15.9 km² (6.1 mi²). 15.5 km² (6.0 mi²) of it is land and 0.4 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.28% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 5,676 people, 2,364 households, and 1,302 families residing in the city. The population density is 365.9/km² (947.0/mi²). There are 2,543 housing units at an average density of 163.9/km² (424.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 96.26% White, 0.33% Black or African American, 0.86% Native American, 0.25% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 1.39% from other races, and 0.88% from two or more races. 3.42% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 2,364 households out of which 29.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 40.5% are married couples living together, 10.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 44.9% are non-families. 38.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 18.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.25 and the average family size is 3.01.

In the city the population is spread out with 25.4% under the age of 18, 9.5% from 18 to 24, 27.0% from 25 to 44, 17.9% from 45 to 64, and 20.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 88.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 84.9 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $31,095, and the median income for a family is $45,128. Males have a median income of $32,488 versus $21,651 for females. The per capita income for the city is $18,890. 10.5% of the population and 7.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 12.9% of those under the age of 18 and 12.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.


Located a few miles outside of Waupaca is Camp Young Judaea Midwest. Camp Young Judaea is a Zionist camp for Jewish youth ages 8-14. (There are also camping opportunities for those ages 15-18 to be junior staff and to be in the "Avodah" program or "work" in english.) Camp Young Judaea Midwest is one of five junior camps in a national network of Jewish camps culminating in a national camp for highschoolers called Camp Tel Yehudah and eventually a 10 month trip to Israel. Camp Tel Yehudah and all of the Young Juadaea junior camps are affilliated with Young Judaea the Zionist youth orginization of Haddasah.
