Wawarsing, New York

Wawarsing is a town located in Ulster County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 12,889.

The Town of Wawarsing is in the western part of the county.

History

The area was first settled around 1685. The town was formed from part of the Town of Rochester.

Geography

The western town lines are the border of Sullivan County, New York.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 346.7 km² (133.9 mi²). 338.6 km² (130.8 mi²) of it is land and 8.1 km² (3.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.32% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 12,889 people, 4,382 households, and 2,966 families residing in the town. The population density is 38.1/km² (98.6/mi²). There are 5,821 housing units at an average density of 17.2/km² (44.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 75.03% White, 12.45% African American, 0.52% Native American, 1.17% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 7.76% from other races, and 3.06% from two or more races. 18.05% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 4,382 households out of which 32.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.8% are married couples living together, 14.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.3% are non-families. 26.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.57 and the average family size is 3.07.

In the town the population is spread out with 23.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 33.1% from 25 to 44, 23.4% from 45 to 64, and 12.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 117.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 119.9 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $35,872, and the median income for a family is $43,828. Males have a median income of $32,121 versus $24,656 for females. The per capita income for the town is $16,512. 19.1% of the population and 13.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 23.6% of those under the age of 18 and 12.9% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
