Wayne County is a county located in the state of Kentucky. As of 2000, the population is 19,923. Its county seat is Monticello6.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,254 km² (484 mi²). 1,190 km² (459 mi²) of it is land and 64 km² (25 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 5.12% water. Wayne County is surrounded by Clinton, Russell, Pulaski, and McCreary.

The county's elevation ranges from 723 to 1788, at the Monticello/Wayne Count Airport the elevation is 963 feet. Wayne County is located in the Pennyrile Plateau [(image) (http://www.uky.edu/KentuckyAtlas/phys-mississippian-plateau.html)] and Eastern Coal Field [(image) (http://www.uky.edu/KentuckyAtlas/phys-eastern-coal-field.html)] regions of Kentucky.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 19,923 people, 7,913 households, and 5,808 families residing in the county. The population density is 17/km² (43/mi²). There are 9,789 housing units at an average density of 8/km² (21/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 96.98% White, 1.49% Black or African American, 0.18% Native American, 0.11% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.47% from other races, and 0.78% from two or more races. 1.46% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 7,913 households out of which 33.40% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.90% are married couples living together, 10.60% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.60% are non-families. 23.90% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.40% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.49 and the average family size is 2.94.

In the county the population is spread out with 25.30% under the age of 18, 8.90% from 18 to 24, 28.10% from 25 to 44, 24.00% from 45 to 64, and 13.60% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 97.80 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.90 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $20,863, and the median income for a family is $24,869. Males have a median income of $24,021 versus $18,102 for females. The per capita income for the county is $12,601. 29.40% of the population and 24.60% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 34.90% of those under the age of 18 and 31.50% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

History

Wayne County was formed December 13, 1800 from Pulaski and Cumberland Counties. It was the 43rd county. Named for General "Mad Anthony" Wayne.
