Wethersfield, Connecticut

Wethersfield is a census-designated place located in Hartford County, Connecticut. Many records from colonial times spell the name Weathersfield. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 26,271.

Wethersfield was founded in 1634, and claims to be the oldest town in Connecticut. It was settled by farmers relocation from Watertown in the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Hartford was settled the year before, but was viewed as only a trading post.

Silas Deane, commissioner to France during the American Revolutionary War, lived in the town, and his house is now part of the Webb Deane Stevens Museum.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 34.0 km² (13.1 mi²). 32.1 km² (12.4 mi²) of it is land and 1.9 km² (0.7 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 5.49% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 26,271 people, 11,214 households, and 7,412 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 818.7/km² (2,119.9/mi²). There are 11,454 housing units at an average density of 356.9/km² (924.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 93.19% White, 2.09% Black or African American, 0.08% Native American, 1.58% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 1.82% from other races, and 1.22% from two or more races. 4.19% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 11,214 households out of which 25.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.9% are married couples living together, 9.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.9% are non-families. 30.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.31 and the average family size is 2.89.

In the CDP the population is spread out with 20.1% under the age of 18, 4.8% from 18 to 24, 26.6% from 25 to 44, 25.1% from 45 to 64, and 23.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 44 years. For every 100 females there are 86.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 82.4 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP is $53,289, and the median income for a family is $68,154. Males have a median income of $43,998 versus $37,443 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $28,930. 4.4% of the population and 2.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 3.8% of those under the age of 18 and 5.5% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
