Ann Arbor Charter Township, Michigan

Ann Arbor Charter Township is a charter township in Washtenaw County in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2000 census, the township had a total population of 4,720. The city of Ann Arbor is adjacent to the township on the south and west sides. Small islands of the Township also lie within the boundaries of the City of Ann Arbor. Over time, these islands are being annexed into the City of Ann Arbor. Under a boundary agreement with the City of Ann Arbor, eventually all of these islands will be annexed into the City.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 45.9 km² (17.7 mi²). 45.7 km² (17.6 mi²) of it is land and 0.2 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.51% water. The City of Ann Arbor was established within the borders of Ann Arbor Township. Over the years, the City has expanded, annexing portions of the Township as it grew, reducing the land area of the Township.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 4,720 people, 1,972 households, and 1,317 families residing in the township. The population density is 103.3/km² (267.5/mi²). There are 2,034 housing units at an average density of 44.5/km² (115.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the township is 81.21% White, 2.25% African American, 0.17% Native American, 13.58% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 0.85% from other races, and 1.89% from two or more races. 2.22% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,972 households out of which 27.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.0% are married couples living together, 4.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% are non-families. 26.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 4.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.32 and the average family size is 2.84.

In the township the population is spread out with 21.1% under the age of 18, 4.6% from 18 to 24, 30.9% from 25 to 44, 28.1% from 45 to 64, and 15.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 95.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.7 males.

The median income for a household in the township is $86,797, and the median income for a family is $103,102. Males have a median income of $75,176 versus $45,320 for females. The per capita income for the township is $56,084. 3.2% of the population and 1.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 1.7% of those under the age of 18 and 1.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
